How Northern Illinois Weather Affects Your Roof Year-Round

Homeowners in the Midwest know just how unpredictable the weather can be. One minute you’re enjoying a sunny afternoon, and the next you’re bracing for damaging hail or sleet.

These constant weather shifts can have a significant impact on your roof, adding extra stress and strain to its structure. Every season brings new challenges that can affect your roof's integrity and lifespan.

In this blog, we're highlighting how each season impacts your roof and what to look for.

Winter

Winter weather can take a toll on your roof due to temperature fluctuations, ice, and snow. These conditions can expose and worsen any underlying issues your roof may have, including cracks and water leaks.

Fluctuating winter temperatures create a freeze-thaw cycle that’s hard on your roof. Leftover rainwater on your roof freezes once the temperatures drop below freezing. Once the weather outside gets warmer, the ice begins to melt again, and the cycle continues.

When the ice freezes, cracks in your roof can start to expand and widen with the added pressure. Additionally, the freeze-thaw cycle also creates ice dams. Ice dams form near the edge of your roof and can cause water to back up and seep into the shingles, resulting in expensive water damage.

Midwestern winters can also bring heavy snowfall. The type of snow affects how it impacts your roof. Wet, packed snow is usually heavier than the fluffy white snow. If there's enough heavy snow weighing down your roof, the added strain can compromise the integrity of your roof.

Between freezing temps, ice buildup, and heavy snow, it’s no surprise that winter is one of the harshest seasons for your roof.

Spring

While spring may bring milder weather to the Midwest, we typically don't notice a significant change in Northern Illinois until late March or April, depending on the year. In the spring, you may experience thunderstorms that bring high winds, heavy rainfall, and damaging hail.

High winds can expose underlying issues with your roof, such as loose asphalt shingles. When they become worn and damaged, the wind can easily tear them off your roof, leaving your roof more susceptible to roof leaks and other weather-related issues.

Consistent or heavy rainfall can compromise your roof’s protective layers. When water seeps under your shingles, it can pool beneath the surface and gradually weaken the roof deck, leading to leaks, mold growth, and costly repairs over time.

Hail is another common concern for homeowners in Northern Illinois each spring. Even small hailstones can dent or crack asphalt shingles, especially those with lower impact ratings.

Spring thunderstorms can highlight the importance of regular roof inspections and maintenance after severe weather conditions and storm damage.

Summer

Midwestern summers can be brutal, and prolonged exposure to high heat, humidity, and UV can negatively impact your roof. The sun can cause your shingles and flashing to crack, fade, and dry out. During the day, the heat can cause your roofing materials to expand and at night, when it cools down, they contract. This creates stress that can crack your shingles, loosen flashing, and overall compromise your roof's integrity.

High humidity can be another concern for Midwestern homeowners during the summer. Excess moisture in the air can promote the growth of algae and moss, especially on shaded or north-facing sections of your roof. To avoid sun damage, proper attic ventilation is key.

Proper attic ventilation is key to preventing heat and humidity damage. Good airflow helps regulate temperatures, reduces energy costs, and prevents excessive heat buildup that can warp shingles or shorten the lifespan of your roof.

Staying proactive with summer roof inspections can help protect your roof from the inevitable summer sun.

Fall

While fall brings cooler temperatures and rainy weather, the weather is relatively mild compared to other seasons. As the leaves begin to fall, debris can clog your gutters and drop onto your roof. Trimming back your tree limbs prevents leaves, twigs, and branches from interfering with your drainage.

When gutters are clogged, rainwater can back up under your shingles, leading to leaks and moisture damage. Overhanging branches can also scrape or puncture shingles during strong winds and rainstorms.

Fall is the perfect time to trim back any stray branches and schedule a professional roof inspection from a trusted roofing company to prevent unwanted roof damage before the Northern Illinois winter begins.
